STRATEGIST EXPLORES MAKING A DIFFERENCE WITH CHARITABLE INVESTMENT

(Palm Beach, FL – February 4, 2016) On January 27, 2016, The Forever Friends Society of the Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League, together with the Ricker Group of Morgan Stanley, welcomed philanthropic consultant, Hal Williams, Founder of The Rensselaerville Institute (TRI), to Palm Beach to honor what the League’s Executive Director/CEO Rich Anderson cited as “the best year ever” in its 90 year history, serving nearly 40,000 cats and dogs in 2015.  With the League supported primarily through private donations, Williams was recognizing the impact of outcomes-oriented philanthropy, and the difference it makes to not-for-profit organizations like the League.

Speaking to 30 area philanthropists, wealth managers and advisors attending The  Forever Friends Society hosted Palm Beach event, Williams shared thoughts and answered questions about the impact philanthropists can make when they treat charitable gifts as investments, with measurable results, rather than just giving money away. “Hal reinforced the concept of the donor as investor versus the traditional funder,” noted Anderson.

Under Williams’ leadership, TRI was dubbed “the think tank with muddy boots” by the Wall Street Journal for its straightforward approach to outcome measurement. TRI is a nonprofit organization that helps foundations and nonprofit organizations focus on results and how to achieve them. Williams’ clients for increasing results include the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, American Express, Greater Kansas City, Boston, and San Diego Community Foundations, The Duke Endowment, Verizon Foundation and General Electric. He has worked with many associations, including the National Association of Community Health Centers and AARP’s national foundation.  He also guides individuals who wish to know the difference they make with philanthropy.

He is lead author of Outcome Funding: a New Approach to Targeted Grantmaking. Now in its 4th edition, the book is widely used in the US and the UK as a framework for allocating and spending money to improve human lives and conditions.   Hal co-founded, with his daughter Gillian, a national program called School Turnaround.

The Ricker Group of Morgan Stanley offers Philanthropy Management and Strategic Giving Services for individuals and families.  It is headquartered at Phillips Point in downtown West Palm Beach.
